63: Radiohead release their landmark rock-electronic fusion album OK Computer

OK Computer was released on June 16, 1997. It was Radiohead’s third album, and it marked Radiohead’s highest entry into the American market at the time, where it debuted at #21. OK Computer expanded the band’s worldwide popularity. OK Computer has received great acclaim from critics and is often cited as the band’s best work and as a landmark album of its time. In 1998, it was nominated for a Grammy Award as Album of the Year, and won for Best Alternative Music Album.

The web site Pitchfork gave the album an unprecedented 10 out of 10 when they reviewed it in 1997. Writer Ryan Schreiber wrote: The record is brimming with genuine emotion, beautiful and complex imagery and music, and lyrics that are at once passive and fire-breathing. OK Computer is like tossing David Bowie, old U2, Spacehog and lots of Pink Floyd into a blender and pushing the ‘kill’ button.

Ten years later, OK Computer still sounds brilliant.
Too bad the “Name your own price” gimmick with IN Rainbows was too late for the countdown…
