57: Pink Floyd release The Wall
Pink Floyd are an English rock band best remembered for their psychedelic rock music. They are known for extravagant live shows with ellaborate sets, abstract lyrics, innovative cover art, and sonic experimentation. In 1979 they released a double album entitled the Wall. The storyline portrays the fictional life of a person named Pink, who is beaten down by society from the beginning of his life. He lost his father in the war, he was smothered by his over-protective mother, and oppressed at school by tyrannical, abusive teachers, so he starts building an imaginary wall in his head. Every bad thing that ever happened to him is “another brick in the wall”. While figuring out how to fill in the last few empty spaces in the wall, Pink puts off its construction for a while. He becomes a rock star and gets married, only to be cheated on by his wife due to his distance and coldness, as well as the life as a rock star. After this he resumes and eventually finishes building the wall. The concert version of The Wall was only performed in a few cities. This was because of the complexity of the performance, which included constructing a giant wall across the stage between band and audience, plus “regular” Floyd props like giant screens, flying pigs and pyrotechnics. The album reached #1 on the Billboard album charts in the US where it stayed for 15 consecutive weeks in early 1980, and it remained on the US charts for two years.
