53: John Lennon writes Imagine for his 1971 album Imagine

John Lennon’s “Imagine” is one of those songs that can make even the most cynical believe world peace is possible. Despite its radical message—calling for an end to religion and capitalism—the song was never considered controversial. According to the All Music Guide, it may be because Lennon wrapped the tune in such a gorgeous melody and hopeful mood. “Imagine” was the leadoff track and title song of John Lennon’s second solo album, released in September 1971. The tune and album were produced by Phil Spector. Lennon may also have had another collaborator—his wife, Yoko Ono. She had written a book of poetry in 1965 called “Grapefruit.” It’s believed he was inspired from lines she wrote like, “imagine a raindrop” and “imagine the clouds dripping.” The song has been covered by everyone from Joan Baez to Pat Boone. Since Lennon’s murder in December of 1980, “Imagine” has been used as a tribute to the musician and his ideals.
