49: Elvis Presley records his first two-sided single at Sun Studios in Memphis

On July 18th, 1953, Elvis Presley, then earning his keep as a truck driver, dropped by the Memphis Recording Service, home of Sun Records. That day he privately records two songs (”My Happiness”/”That’s When Your Heartaches Begin”) for the sum of $4, and left with a ten-inch acetate, which he reportedly gave to his mother as a belated birthday gift. Returning to Sun Studios on January 4, 1954, he recorded a second acetate, “I’ll Never Stand in Your Way”/”It Wouldn’t Be the Same Without You.” Six months later Elvis cut “That’s All Right” and the rest as they say…is rock and roll history.
