64: The musical Hair opens on Broadway

“Hair” was the hippie generation’s first foray on to Broadway. The self-described “American Tribal Love-Rock Musical” started off-Broadway in October 1967. It then opened on Broadway in April 1968, running for 1,873 performances, and productions quickly spread worldwide. Joan Armatrading, Diane Keaton, Ted Neely, Meatloaf, Donna Summer, Tim Curry, and Ben Vereen all appeared in early productions of “Hair”. Lyricists James Rado and Gerome Ragni and composer Galt MacDermot captured the themes of the 60s, including the anti-war movement, drugs, and the sexual revolution. An Act I nude scene initially attracted much comment and controversy, but in the end, it is the songs, such as “Aquarius,” “Easy to Be Hard,” “Good Morning Starshine,” and the title anthem that have made the musical endure. Several versions of its most memorable songs, re-recorded by the Fifth Dimension and Three Dog Night, became Top 40 hits, and a film version was released in 1979.
