210: Brian Johnson replaces Bon Scott, release Back in Black

After Bon Scott’s death on February 19, 1980, AC/DC considered disbanding, even knowing full well that Bon would have wanted them to continue the band. So, the process of replacing the legendary vocalist started. Several vocalists were considered for filling the void. Buzz Shearman, an ex-Moxy member, and Terry Sessler were considered as possible replacements. However, Angus Young later recalled, “I remember Bon playing me Little Richard, and then telling me the story of when he saw Brian singing.”

Bon would tell Angus of Johnson’s performance screaming at the top of lungs then falling to the floor screaming and writhing around on the floor. Furthermore, Bon did not know that Brian Johnson had appendicitis that caused him to be rolling around on the stage. So, the band auditioned the ex-Geordie vocalist and was given the job as their new lead singer.

With the band complete, they finished writing the album they started with Bon Scott: Back In Black, which was produced by Mutt Lange and recorded by Tony Platt. Back In Black went on to become their biggest selling album. It contained such hit songs such as “Hells Bells,” “You Shook Me All Night Long” and the title track “Back In Black.”
