225: The Singles movie and soundtrack released
Cameron Crowe’s 1992 film Singles was less successful overall than both its predecessor, Say Anything, and successor, Jerry Maguire. However, what’s notable about it, addition to Matt Dillon in a bad wig as the lead singer of movie band Citizen Dick, is the soundtrack that captured much of the ascendant grunge scene. The production of the film took place in ‘91 and prior to the grunge’s explosion, Warner Brothers had no clue how to market it. With Nevermind and cameo stars Pearl Jam, topping the charts, the film finally opened June 30, 1992. The collection features contributions from Smashing Pumpkins, Alice in Chains, the Screaming Trees, Soundgarden, Mother Love Bone and, of course, Pearl Jam. In addition to encompassing the grunge sound, the film made prominent use of the first solo material from The Replacements’ Paul Westerberg – “Dyslexic Heart” and “Waiting for Somebody”. Singles helped form the idea of the Seattle music scene for mainstream music fans. The soundtrack went platinum and reached the Top Ten. The film spawned a wave of Gen X imitators, including Reality Bites.
