319: Miles Davis Records Bitches Brew

Miles Davis recorded the album “Bitches Brew” between August of 1969 and January of 1970, though much of the work after August was editing and mixing. The great trumpeter’s parting shot at the 60s was really an attempt to update jazz in the age of rock. Davis was joined by a team of incredibly talented artists, including Joe Zawinul and Wayne Shorter, who would later form Weather Report (indeed “Bitches Brew” may be said to have launched Weather Report), and John McLaughlin, Chick Corea, Jack DeJohnette, Dave Holland, and Harvey Brooks among others. “Bitches Brew” was a double LP, featuring six long tracks. Producer Teo Macero and Davis came up with a funky, mesmerizing, and meandering set of tunes that took jazz to a new place — if indeed the album can be called “jazz.” The original “Bitches Brew” closed with a tune Davis had previously recorded, “Sanctuary”– completely recast on this album, both a connection to the past, and a pathway to the future, of his music.

Producer Teo Macero remembers his work with Miles Davis:
