326: Grease released in theaters

Grease is a film directed by Randal Kleiser and based the musical of the same name. The film stars John Travolta, Olivia Newton-John, Stockard Channing, Jeff Conaway and Eve Arden and was released in theatres on June 16, 1978. The movie takes place in the summer of 1959, when wholesome good girl Sandy Olsen and greaser renegade Danny Zuko fall in love. When summer ends, they part forever, they think, only to find themselves at the same school. Danny’s tough-guy image as leader of the T-Birds, a leather-clad gang, makes it hard for him to acknowledge the squeaky-clean Sandy. Despite befriending Frenchy, one of the rebel Pink Ladies and declaring their devotion in such ballads as “Hopelessly Devoted to You” and “Sandy,” Sandy and Danny split, reconcile, and split again amidst a pep rally, dances, drive-ins, and a drag race, before deciding “You’re the One That I Want” at the climactic carnival.
