447: Red Hot Chili Peppers release Blood Sugar Sex Magik
Although Red Hot Chili Peppers formed in 1983, it was their fifth album, 1991’s Blood Sugar Sex Magik, that broke the California band into the mainstream, selling over 12 million copies. Blood Sugar Sex Magik produced a string of hits for the band, including “Give It Away,” “Under the Bridge,” “Suck My Kiss” and “Breaking the Girl.” However, the album also represented some internal turmoil for the band: growing uncomfortable with the band’s success, and under the influence of an increasing drug problem, guitarist John Frusciante left mid-tour in 1992. The Chili Peppers continued to tour and record, and Frusciante returned to the band — sober — in 1998.
