446: Replacements sign to major label

There has never been a band as seemingly into sabotaging their own career as much as The Replacements were. Even though they were desperate to be liberated from their Twin Tone Records deal, their major label showcases were often embarrassing exercises in drunken debauchery - all tuneless covers and broken equipment. However, Seymour Stein, spotting their raw potential, signed The ‘Mats to Sire Records to record their major label debut, Tim. Tim, produced by Ramone Tommy Erdelyi, featured them at their loudest - “Bastards of Young” - to their most vulnerable - “Here Comes a Regular”. Even within the constraints of major label success, The ‘Mats maintained their infamously subversive streak. Every video off the album was a sarcastic dismissal of MTV friendly contemporaries. Each was entirely composed of a static closeup of a speaker.
