406: George Harrison dies at the age of 58
In 2001 the beloved “quiet one” George Harrison passed away at age 58 after a long battle with cancer. Though always known as the lead guitarist of The Beatles, George Harrison’s solo accomplishments were many. Stepping out of the shadow of Lennon/McCartney, he achieved the first #1 single of any ex-Beatle with “My Sweet Lord”, and his landmark triple album All Things Must Pass remains the best selling solo Beatle effort. He was instrumental in forming 80s supergroup, the Traveling Wilburys. In addition to music, Harrison was an activist – organizing the first large-scale benefit concert (1971’s Concert for Bangladesh) as well as the producer behind Handmade Films, which was responsible for Monty Python’s Life of Brian. In 1999, Harrison survived a knife attack by an intruder in his home, reinforcing a fear of stalkers intensified after John Lennon’s death. Harrison rarely made public appearances following this incident. In early 2002, Harrison and Aaliyah made UK chart history when they scored the first and only pair of back-to-back posthumous number one hits as Aaliyah’s “More than a Woman” was followed by the re-release of Harrison’s “My Sweet Lord”. Harrison was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a solo artist in 2004.
