389: Lauryn Hill releases The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill
Multi-talented singer, rapper, producer, and actress Lauryn Hill initially built her formidable reputation on her highly visible tenure at the center of hip-hop outfit The Fugees. In 1998, she launched her solo career with the critically lauded concept album The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill. Miseducation was signifcant for a wide variety of reasons. It promoted the then-emerging neo-soul genre to a wider audience. Also, but no less significantly, the work was a remarkable triumph among black recording stars, female hip-hop artists and female musicians overall. With eleven nominations and five wins, Miseducation dominated the 1998 Grammys. Hill’s strengths soared alongside her high profile guest collaborators - D’Angelo, Carlo Santana, Mary J. Blige, and John Legend. The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill ranked #312 in Rolling Stones’ 2005 list of the 500 greatest albums of all time.
