507: Hank Williams releases “Move It on Over”

Hiram “Hank” King Williams was an American singer, guitarist, songwriter and one of the most influential musicians of the 20th century. His first major country hit was “Move It On Over” which was released in 1947 and reached #4 on the Billboard Country Singles chart . The song follows a man who is forced to sleep in the doghouse after coming home late at night and not being allowed into his house by his wife. Though the song bears some similarities to Charley Patton’s “Going to Move to Alabama,” Williams’ rendition is considered influential to later rock-and-roll. In the decades since its release, the song has been covered a number of times by artists such as Ray Charles, Bill Haley, George Thorogood, and Williams’ son Hank Williams Jr.
