506: Heart release Dreamboat Annie

The sole constant of Heart has been the band’s core members, the Wilson sisters, and their shared penchant for Zeppelin-esque rock. With Ann on lead vocals and guitarist Nancy, their fledgling band had relocated to Vancouver from Washington State in 1975 when they attracted the attention of Canadian label Mushroom Records. Their debut, Dreamboat Annie, yielded hits “Crazy on You” and “Magic Man”. Unsure how to market Heart, Mushroom relied on exploitative techniques. Said to have started a lesbian rumor about Nancy and Ann, the label ran a full page ad in Rolling Stone suggestively captioned, “It was only our first time”. Infuriated by the rumors, poor treatment, and the overall difficulty of being a female in hard rock, Ann wrote follow-up hit “Barracuda”. Heart had ongoing legal troubles with Mushroom through 1978. Eventually, the band got a much needed fresh start and scored a long string of hits in the mid-80s.
