504: Iggy Pop smears peanut butter on himself at 1970 Cincinnati Pop Festival
Premier wild man Iggy Pop has an enduring reputation for over-the-edge, into the abyss antics. His shows, particularly in the early 70s with proto-punks The Stooges, were violent, hypersexual or self-destructive, usually all at once. His lack of inhibitions and go for broke style dared audiences to up the ante. The most famous “Iggy Pop crazy moment” is arguably his appearance at the Cincinnati Pop Festival in 1970. Promoting album Funhouse, The Stooges stomped through “TV Eye” as Iggy began to walk God-like on top of the audience. Suddenly, a hand thrust a jar of peanut butter towards him. He began to smear it across his chest and hurl the rest into the audience. The incident has become legend – a time when the rush of adrenaline and copious drugs pushed a performer beyond anyone’s average definition of “showmanship” into joyous barbarianism.
