610: George Harrison accused of plagiarism

Bright Tunes Music v. Harrisongs Music: After The Beatles split up, George Harrison released a volume of his solo work on the triple album “All Things Must Pass.” The album was the first triple album by a single artist in rock history and topped the charts in 1970. “My Sweet Lork”, one of the singles on the album topped the charts on both sides of the Atlantic. Following its release, musical similarities between Harrison’s “My Sweet Lord,” and the Chiffons “He’s So Fine,” began to surface and led to a lengthly court battle over copyright infringement. Harrison denied the charges, but the U.s. federal court decision said that Harrison was found to have “unintentionally copied the earlier song.” He was ordered to give up most of the royalties. Damage disputes dragged into the ’90s, then his manager, Allen Klein changed sides and bought Bright Tunes, which published “He’s So Fine.” Harrison ultimately ended up as the owner of both songs. The Chiffons later recorded “My Sweet Lord” to capitalize on the publicity generated by the lawsuit.
