682: The O’Jays release “Back Stabbers”
1972’s Back Stabbers is a monument to the Philly Sound, a career highpoint for Philadelphia International Records founders Gamble and Huff, producer Bunny Sigler, and, of course, vocal group The O’Jays. Each song was another powerful funk symphony enhanced by Eddie Levert’s commanding vocals and matter of fact, incisive lyrics commenting on the often dark side of human nature. The title track, as well as “Love Train” and “992 Arguments”, established the mood of a Philadelphia in transition and, beyond Broad Street, set an international gold standard for 70s R&B.
