862: Island Records signs King Sunny Ade, tries to make Juju music from Nigeria the next Reggae
In 1974, after being fed-up with the way major labels treated artists, Nigerian-born King Sunny Ade started releasing albums on Mango Records, a subsidiary of Island Records. Juju Music was Ade’s first album for Island, and its success earned him the nickname the African Bob Marley.
