854: The Flaming Lips play the Peach Pit After Dark on “Beverly Hills, 90210″
In their two decade history the Flaming Lips have been mid-western weirdoes, 90s alterna-rock heroes, acid bubblegum meets noise experimentalists, and the critically acclaimed hope for mainstream rock’s future. But the “Davy Jones” to Tori Spelling’s “Marcia Brady”? During a surreal night at the Peach Pit After Dark, post-Shannen Doherty knockoff Tiffani-Amber Thiessen introduced the Lips taking the stage. As character Steve Sanders infamously said about the performance of their breakthrough single “She Don’t Use Jelly”, “these guys rocked!” Recalls Flaming Lip Wayne Coyne, “When 90210 called up and said, ‘We want The Flaming Lips to play The Peach Pit,’ we thought it was a joke-but a joke like that you can’t afford to pass up!” Their “joke” appearance paved the way for the mainstreaming of indie rock a decade later on “The O.C.”
