Best Dancer Award at Singer Songwriter Weekend ‘99

by Kathryn Simpson, Lumberton, NJ

Ever since I was six months old, my family has been taking me to XPN’s summer concert festival. However, in 1999, when the festival was still called Singer Songwriter Weekend, I experienced a concert that I will never forget.

Being the energetic eight year old that I was, I would always get up and dance to whatever music may be playing. Well that year, the lead singer of Old 97’s, Rhett Miller, made an announcement that “the dance award of the day goes to that little girl in the blue shirt who looks like shes having so much fun.” When the rest of the audience turned to me and started cheering I felt like a star. Even when I went up to get the band’s autograph at the meet-and-greet table, everyone in line let me go to the front since I was “VIP” for the day.

Well to say the least, this was not only my most memorable musical moment, but one of the most memorable moments of my childhood.
