Meeting John Prine
by Wayne Fuller, Mount Holly, NJ
July 21,1991. John Prine at Penns Landing. My wife and I along with our daughters, Lyndsay (age12) and Ashley (age 5), the girls’ first concert. I stayed in the bleachers with Lyndsay [she has cerebral palsy and is in a wheelchair] while my wife put Ashley on her shoulders and went up front. John played Ashley’s favorite song, Fish and Whistle, and I could hear her singing at the top of her lungs.
John was great, as he always is. We waited for th e crowd to clear before we left. A man approached us as we were leaving. He said he noticed my wife and Ashley singing their hearts out. He asked us if we would like to meet John. Of course we said yes. I went in the trailer with Ashley while my wife waited outside with Lyndsay. John couldn’t of been nicer. We spoke for about 5 minutes. We took pictures and John signed our program, “To Ashley, Fish and Whistle, Whistle and Fish, Eat Everything that They Put On Your Dish, Love John Prine.”
I asked John if he would come outside to meet my wife and Lyndsay. He agreed and he immediately went to Lyndsay and put his arm around her and gave her a kiss. My wife is still jealous she didn’t get a kiss. We have seen John many times since but that day is a treasured memory we talk about often and tell everyone. Thank you, John.
