Mary Chapin Carpenter at the Philadelphia Folk Festival

by Dan Bencsik, Sellersville, PA

When I was seven I saw Mary Chapin Carpenter at the Folk Festival with my mom, dad and brother. Mom had gotten the album and earlier that summer we traveled to Kansas to visit relatives and listened to it the whole way out. We then went to the Folk Festival and my brother and I sang along to every one of her songs. Great performance.

If I’m not mistaken, I went that year too (mid-80’s?), and she was a virtual unknown at the time - in fact they were handing out free vinyl EP’s of selections from her debut album, “Hometown Girl” at the festival. I still have it somewhere - it’s probably a collector’s item by now. She put on a fine performance and I’ve been a fan ever since.
