Richie Havens Opens the Sellersville Theater
by Dan Bencsik, Sellersville, PA
We live in Sellersville and the theater was a new idea from the owner of the Washington House restaurant, William Quigley. Richie Havens was the opening act, and we had donated money to become members in anticipation of being able to get first dibs on the tickets.
Me, my family, and a couple friends got tables down front at the table area of the theater, and Richie was magical. When he did all Tupelo Honey, the song was recreated in a way that Van Morrison had never touched me before. Seeing Richie Havens do that song live and break into Dylan was a classic in my mind and was something I long to see again. The mood was amazing, and I have seen many acts at the theater and around the Philadelphia area since then hoping someone will come close to recreating what I felt that night. He renewed my spirit and made me long for more. It was one of my greatest music moments.
