Dan the List Guy: Heavy Metal
The List Guy is Dan Reed, Music Director for WXPN. Three times a week, Dan gives his spin on Top 10 musical moments in pop culture.
However you care to define it, metal is here to stay. The hair, the pyrotechnics, the thundering drums and bass, wailing lead guitar – it’s all become a rite of passage for many music fans and a great way to piss off mom and dad. Here’s a dirty dozen of the very best, and – as always – feel free to add your favorites:
1. Black Sabbath (Ozzy era, please…)
2. Motorhead
3. Metallica
4. AC/DC
5. Judas Priest
6. Iron Maiden
7. Kiss
8. Slayer
9. Pantera
10. Tool
11. Anthrax
12. Van Halen

Led Zeppelin is the glaring omision - and you can argue if you want whether they really were metal, but they’re the equal to Sabbath and above everyone else in the influence on metal bands that came after….
August 24th, 2007 at 10:43 amI have to agree with you. Classic GnR is the other glaring omission.
August 24th, 2007 at 11:07 amPlus… not specifying (as he did with Sabbath):
“Van Halen (Diamond Dave era please…)”
August 24th, 2007 at 11:08 am1. Slayer
2. Metallica
3. Judas Priest
4. Iron Maiden
5. Megadeth
6. Motorhead
7. Venom
8. Death
9. Black Sabbath
10. Led Zeppelin
11. Deicide
12. Cannibal Corpse

Blah Blah Blah Ozzy era only please. Spend an hour and listen to Born Again with Ian Gillan. I’m sorry but it is one of their heaviest albums. If you are going to talk “metal” then you should know how good this album is. Trashed, Zero the Hero, Born Again, Disturbing the Priest are amazing. Dio wasn’t bad either.
