Metallica GnR Tour ‘91
By Todd Breitling, Wilmington, DE
It was the summer of ‘91, I believe. Both of these bands were the biggest in the music business at the time of this long awaited, much anticipated, yet slightly unexpected tour. As soon as I heard about it I bought tickets for the 1st two nights of the tour, opening at RFK stadium and the next night in Giants stadium at the Meadowlands. No one expected the 2 biggest bands in the world to ever tour together. Rumor started getting around in the metal world that GnR would only tour with mighty Metallica if they could close all the shows, typically something Metallica always did. Metallica did not have a problem with that and promptly played 3 hour sets each nite and wore the crowds out so bad that by the time Axl took his usual 2 hours to get on stage most of the fans were wiped out after slamming in to each other for ‘tallica’s set. GnR still rocked hard but Metallica proved they were and still are the baddest band in the land.
