Sad days/hope

by Kim Sprow, Philadelphia, Pa

I’m sorry that my most memorable moments are sad, but that IS life, right?

When I found out Bill Graham died in 1991, I was profoundly sad. My boss made fun of me and no one around seemed to realize the weight of his loss meant. Bonnie Raitt was on Saturday Night Live that night and dedicated “I Can’t Make You Love Me” to him. The moment is frozen in time for me.

I’m sure you’re hearing John Lennon’s death many times day. It was a bitter sweet day for me because my sister was born that night (exact day and year) and I remember walking to junior high that next morning feeling elated one moment and horribly sad the next. Every year around her birthday I think about how the world has changed for her and all humanity. It is still a bittersweet day.

My last one won’t really matter, but after waiting a decade to see Daniel Lanois live, I not only got to see him (2003/TLA), but got to hang out with him for a couple of hours after the show. It’s amazing when an artist’s personality is just as great as their music. It gives one hope!

I also vividly remember Bonnie announcing Bill Graham’s death on SNL…
