The world premiere of Goldfinger

by Scott Patrick, Philadelphia, PA

It was September 17, 1972 when ABC presented the world premiere of “Goldfinger” on the Sunday night movie beginning at 9pm. These then 10-year-old eyes had seen secret agents before—I SPY, GET SMART, THE AVENGERS, MISSION IMPOSSIBLE. My friends and I played “spy” with toy guns and plastic attache cases. Now here was my first chance to see the big man himself, Bond, James Bond 007 on “free TV.”

The movie was of course great. But as striking as the visuals was the music. John Barry’s classic score from Shirley Bassey’s thundering rendition of the title song, to the twang of the James Bond Theme, was just so cool! Several days later, my Dad, who shared my love of 007, presented me with a copy of GOLDFINGER soundtrack album (vinyl!). I played that thing over and over until the grooves wore out. Now my backyard adventures with my firends had a soundtrack……….

James Bond, and James Bond music, remain a fun part of my adult life. The James Bond theme not only evokes movie memories, but happy childhood fun, and things I shared with my beloved Dad.

Everything sounds better sung in the style of Shirley Bassey. Ever hear her “Light My Fire”? Killer.
