Rolling Stones 1972 Tour - July 21 Spectrum
by Michael Emley, Jackson, NJ
$6.50 got you into the Spectrum for an afternoon show on a hot day in July. The sun was streaming in the concourse and it was the first of TWO shows that day. We just walked on to the floor to the 6th row. I still cannot believe what I saw, after all I was only 17. First off I don’t think I ever saw a real junkie in person before. These guys were from another planet. The lighting, with the mirror mounted in front of the stage and the spots behind the band, was very intense. Musically it was ROCK & ROLL mixed with some blues. Brown Sugar to start and the set moved so quick it just built with intensity the whole time. Awesome stuff.
To top it off Stevie Wonder was the opener and came out a played Satisfaction and Uptight with the Stones. I have seen them 26 times since then and was only disappointed once. In 1978 they played a horrible show at JFK the day “Some Girls” was released.
