Joplin…Hendrix…The Singer Bowl
By Laurin Hinkle, Kirkwood, PA
When I was 16, my friend Alan and I went to a concert at The Singer Bowl, an open venue that was part of the New York Worlds Fair. It was 1969… although at that age, one didn’t carry a calender. Yes, feeling that ALIVE. Anyway, the tickets were fifteen bucks for four bands. Yes, FIFTEEN DOLLARS! A steal at half the price. The Lineup: Soft Machine (An Engish Prog band), The Chambers Brothers (Time), JANIS Joplin w/The Holding Company……and….THE JIMI HENDRIX EXPERIENCE! A helicopter circled overhead…dropping flyers for Soft Machine. Janis wore a miniskirt/dress with daisies where her nipples were. Then Jimi came on. Alan was getting antsy. His parents told him to meet them in the parking lot at midnite. It was midnite when Hendrix came on. I had to badger him to here the first three tunes. His parents were pissed that we were late. But, I saw Hendrix one time after that in NYC. Saw the whole thing. Alan is now a podiatrist… I am a rural mail carrier in Amish country. The power of Rock. Laurin…
