Daily Dose for August 10

By Jen Oliver, Project Lead for WXPN’s 885 Most Memorable Musical Moments.
Bruce Warren is on vacation and will resume the Daily Dose Monday, August 13th.

Help us build the list! As we get closer to the Voting and Countdown phases of the 885 Most Memorable Musical Moments, we need your help building out our list of potential memorable historic moments.

When it comes to qualifying important landmarks in music history, things like the Beatles on Ed Sullivan, invention of the phonograph, and Altamont are gimmes. But 885 is a big number. There will be monumental moments as well as smaller moments rounding out the list.

We’ve already received some submissions from listeners that involve minor — but still significant — historic moments. Jen in Limerick, PA wrote about Murphy Brown singing “You make me feel like a natural woman” to her controversial, fictitious baby. “It was a sweet moment in the middle of silly arguments around a TV show and the storyline they presented.” Jim Shilliday of Philadelphia wrote about Jose Feliciano giving his own twist to the national anthem at Game 5 of the 1968 World Series. And Suzanne Sawyer of Atlantic City talked about the ways in which Joan Baez helped the city of San Francisco heal in a year in which the city experienced a lot of collective grief and despair.

We’ve received so many amazing personal stories. And we’re still collecting them through August 31. Keep in mind, though, when you’re thinking about your personal moments, we would also love to hear about some of the quieter but significant historic moments that you think belong on the countdown.

    Memorable personal moment:
Lyle Lovett gave a free concert at the local Borders Book store years ago - an event I was determined not to miss. I got there early and found people already on top of tables, bookshelves, vying for a good view. Lyle looked amazed at all the people who turned out to see him. Afterwards, he signed CDs and posed for pictures for the entire line (a process that took hours). When I got to the table, I blurted out that the day’s concert had been a real celebration for me, as it was my last day on the job with a “boss from hell” - as of that moment I was unemployed, but happy. He opened his big blue eyes wide, and looked surprised - and on my CD he wrote, “congratulations!”

in the early seventies when you went to a concert at the spectrum there were two opening acts for the headliner. i went to see the opening acts. only half the arena was used. i was not disapointed with TAJ MAHAL and BOZ SCAGGS but the BEACH BOYS were so good the cops were dancing in the concourse. i went to a lot of shows then and this was one of the best.
