There were many angles I was going to use in this piece. But nothing seemed to do Kurt justice. So I’ll be brief and to the point.
A few days before April 8, 1994, my father and I went to see the film Short Cuts. This is not a feel good movie. Something about all the different characters living all their different f*cked up lives put me in a bad mood.
That Friday, school was out. Teacher’s in service maybe. So I was home. I was watching MTV when Kurt L. broke the news about Kurt C. Watch that newscast at YouTube.
I continued to watch MTV for the rest of that day. My mood grew darker. My musical tastes were once again starting to chance, leaning more on classic rock than alt-rock; but the idea that a major musical icon for my generation had shot himself was sad stuff.

No stong moment aside from Cobain, but when I heard about Wendy O. Williams (of the Plasmatics), I was surprised … but then I hadn’t heard that name in years. She had basically wound down her musical career to work with animals. I don’t remember hearing if she left a note or anything, just that she was supposedly depressed.
