Debut of “Hair”

Hair was rock music’s first foray into Broadway. The self-titled “American Tribal Love-Rock Musical” started off-Broadway in 1967. It then opened on Broadway & productions appeared around the world. Joan Armatrading’s career began in a British production of “Hair.” Writers James Rado & Gerome Ragni captured the themes of the 60s, including the anti-war movement and the sexual revolution, with this first rock musical. A nude scene initially attracted much attention, but in the end, it is the songs, such as “Aquarius,” “Easy to Be Hard,” “Good Morning Starshine,” and “Hair,” that have made the musical Hair endure.

Trivia fact: Diane Keaton was a member of the original cast.
