Aqualung, the stage musical
by David Calloway, Swarthmore, PA
Since first hearing it in 1971, I’ve held Aqualung to be the best rock album ever. One evening in late 1975, I was rehearsing for The Pirates of Penzance, a Gilbert & Sullivan operetta, with Rose Valley Chorus. Drifting in my fantasies on a glorious duet one evening, offstage at a rehearsal, the world and life of Aqualung were suddenly surging out their angst on the stage.
Ever since, I’ve envisioned turning Aqualung into a stage musical. In the late 80s, I even emailed the concept to the Official J.Tull Website, “attn. Ian Anderson”. No reply, of course. Just a bit of a procrastinator, I’ve yet to try again.
