Blue Stringbean

by John Healy, Somerdale, NJ

In the mid seventies they started having occasional concerts at Camden County College in the 600 seat auditorium in Lincoln Hall. My friends and I went to most of them. We saw Robert Palmer, Manfred Mann, The Outlaws even Buddy Rich.

Ed Sciocky on MMR had been playing some live tracks from the Main Point by some guy named Bruce Springsteen. I liked what I heard but knew nothing really about him. I noticed that his name was on the sign at the CCC student center so I bought a couple tickets. I asked my then-girlfriend Lois if she would like to go. She answered, “Sure. Who’s Blue Stringbean?”

Bruce’s bus was late because of a snow storm and the band didn’t get started until about 10 pm and they played a long show. I think they ran out of songs too because the last encore, the third or was it the fourth, was a cover of Gary US Bonds’ “Quarter To Three”. I don’t usually yell scream at rock shows but I was literally hoarse for three days after that show.

I’m pretty sure Lois knows who Blue Stringbean is now.
