A Harry Chapin moment
by Cynthia, Warrington, PA
This is also my most embarrassing moment. It was 1980, Mansfield, PA. Harry played a wonderful acoustic set at the college. After the concert, there was a reception for Harry at one of the Frat houses. Harry was there, and everyone was talking to him, getting autographs, etc.
I asked Harry for his autograph, and he complied. When he handed my signed ticket stub back to me, he did not let go. He looked me in the eye as we both held the ticket and said “Instead of giving you my autograph, I’d like to take you out on the porch and make mad, passionate love to you”.
At 20 years old, and with much grace, I uttered “I’ll take the ticket”, and tugged the ticket out of his hand. I was so shocked at this, of course I went and told all my friends. In the meantime, Harry was leaving and saying his good-byes. I was leaving the party about 30 minutes later. I swung open the solid oak door, which opened as if in slow motion, as I blurted out “Is he waiting for me?” Just as the words were out of my mouth, the door opened a bit further, and there was Harry, just going down the front walk. He turned and looked at me, and I ran out of there as fast as I could!!
