Dan the List Guy: The Dozen Most Influential Country Music Performers
The List Guy is Dan Reed, Music Director for WXPN. Three times a week, Dan gives his spin on Top 10 musical moments in pop culture.
This was a tough list to whittle down, but here’s what I came up with. Now, some of the following people performed sometimes outside of the country music genre, but they were fair game if country was their best-known milieu. I think you should all own at least a few songs by each and every one of the following:
1. Hank Williams
2. Johnny Cash
3. Jimmie Rodgers
4. The Carter Family
5. Willie Nelson
6. Loretta Lynn
7. Merle Haggard
8. George Jones
9. Waylon Jennings
10. Tammy Wynette
11. Buck Owens
12. Steve Earle

What about Garth Brooks? Certainly influential. We can disparage his poor “songwriting”-choices of songs, affiliation with Wal-Mart, etc. etc.-but the fact remains that he ushered in the pop-country format that is what “country” has become.
