Space Captain…………
by Kurt Myers, Cinnaminson, NJ
It was 1971 and I was stationed on a submarine in Norfolk, Va. On the weekends I would work security at the Hampton Roads Coliseum. That weekend the show was Joe Cocker with Mad Dogs and Englishman, Leon Russell opened. After the show we were invited back to the hotel with the band. We were sitting around the hotel room with the band members and back-up singers when they started talking about the arrangement of one of the songs and how they might be able to “kick-it up.” They started to mimic the sound of their instruments to this new arrangement when Joe walked in. They mimiced the new arrangement for Joe and before long the entire band with back-up singers were mimicing “Space Captain” in its entirety. It was the overwhelming. Every member did their own insturment and the back-up singers did their parts and Joe was incredible. Every time I hear that song I get goose bumps. Please consider this moment and give me goose bumps again…..
