David Bowie becomes Ziggy Stardust
It’s one thing to portray a character, and something else to become it. In 1971, David Bowie reinvented himself as a rock star named Ziggy Stardust with his album The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars. Always the visual artist as well as the musician, Bowie inhabited the Ziggy character for only a short time, but it was a time that brought a theatrical flair to rock music — as well as a new androgyny. With songs like the title track, “Rock ‘n’ Roll Suicide”, and “Lady Stardust” Bowie explored bisexuality, rock stardom, and being the object of attention of all sorts.
