Alan Freed and “Rock and Roll”

Freed began his career in New Castle, PA in 1942 and a decade later was in Cleveland where, as “Moondog,” he came up with the term “Rock and Roll” to describe the black R&B songs that were getting tons of listener response. Six years later – while at his peak hosting live Rock and Roll shows in NYC for station WINS - the radio payola scandal hit and Freed was fired from his radio and TV jobs.
