Bee Gees concert - June 1979 - Houston TX

Bee Gees concert - June 1979 - Houston TX
The 1970’s were the high point of my pop music interest. The Bee Gees concert at the Summit in Houston TX in June 1979 was the pinnacle and my musical moment. The group was, of course, hugely popular after the success of Saturday Night Fever. The encore performance at the end of the concert was a heart pumping rendition of “You Should Be Dancing.” John Travolta was shooting Urban Cowboy in the Houston area but I don’t know if concert goers were expecting him to appear that night. I certainly wasn’t. He didn’t look anything like “Tony Manero” in Saturday Night Fever. When he suddenly appeared at the back of the stage with a beard and wearing a simple white short sleeved shirt and black pants, few people recognized him. Then as he began to dance, the crowd, myself included, began to realize what we were witnessing. The moment was electric and etched a permanent place in my memory.  It is especially poignant for me because my daughter was at the concert with me, and she was 4 years old at the time.  Now she is a WXPN staff member. These many years later when so many things have changed, including the death of Maurice Gibb, that song and concert take me back to the most thrilling musical experience of my life.
