In fact, early MTV reminds me a little of XPN (bear with me here) because they played just about anything. It was the most diverse music mix anywhere. FM radio was already starting to get rigidly formatted, so MTV was the only option unless someone lent me a cool record and I made a cassette tape. (Hmmm, guess that *really* dates me.) MTV got me started on so-called alternative music.
