“Flashdance” Premieres
Flashdance, despite negative reviews by the critics, became one of the biggest films of 1983, and spawned Irene Cara’s Academy Award-winning musical anthem “Flashdance (What A Feeling).” The movie, staring Jennifer Beals, aka Alex Owens, steel-mill worker by day, exotic dancer by night – told the tale of Alex’s dream: to obtain a place at a prestigious dance school, the (fictional) Pittsburgh Conservatory of Dance and Repertory. Along the way the video for “What a Feeling” hit #1 in the summer of ‘83, and launched a new appetite for ripped sweatshirts and heels.
