Phil Spector’s Wall of Sound

November 3, 1962 – “He’s a Rebel” by the Crystals reaches #1 on the charts, placing Phil Spector’s Wall of Sound at the top of the musical world. Long before he became a celebrity on trial for murder, Phil Spector created the Wall of Sound, a production technique that creates a dense, layered sound — one that reproduced well on AM Radio and 7” 45s. To achieve his saturated, rich sound, Spector recorded large groups of musicians playing intricately orchestrated lines — often doubling or tripling parts in unison with multiple instruments, or voices — Spector produced a string of hits for artists like The Crystals, Righteous Brothers, and the Ronettes.
